How to Create hand-drawn Characters and Scenes for eLearning: Holiday Drink'n'Draw

You know the holidays have officially arrived with our annual Holiday episode to close out the year.  This year we ended with a Holiday Drink’n’Draw and it was fantastic.

Kevin Thorn (aka NuggetHead), joined us for the community favorite topic of drawing, creativity, and just plain old FUN!

In this episode Kevin walked us through a few warmup exercises and then we got right into creating our own characters just using shapes.

And just for fun, here are my own attempts at the exercise Kevin led us through, working on a small whiteboard.

While you might think these simple shapes are silly, too simple, or just not useful for the work you do, Kevin offers up these reasons for why they are useful:

  1. Use these characters to create your storyboard images
  2. Use these characters to communicate concepts
  3. Use these characters in your eLearning to avoid conflicts of diversity and inclusion
  4. Use these generic characters as androgenous figures to avoid gender stereotypes in your eLearning
  5. Use these characters as small digital icons or navigational images

And that’s just a few of the reasons why, and how, these characters work in your eLearning.

If you didn’t stay until the end of the episode, you missed Kevin’s demo of how he goes from analog to digital to convert his pencil and ink on paper drawings as vector shapes for use in any image editing tool or even importing them directly into your dominKnow | ONE image library.

And as a reminder...

YES! You CAN draw!

YES! You ARE creative!

YES! You MUST practice!

So, start practicing today.  Or right after you watch the episode.
