Challenges

The clients’ legacy LCMS was being deprecated and would no longer serve as their primary means of authoring content. As a result, the client conducted a search for a robust tool that could handle a high degree of customization with the ability to use HTML, JavaScript, and xAPI data. Additionally, the client required content that was WCAG compliant and the agility to dynamically deliver content to formal and informal learners regardless of location.

Before using dominKnow | ONE, the client had no ability to embed HTML widgets and were limited by the functionality of their previous tool. Such restrictions also meant the client was unable to incorporate necessary animated interactions, which stopped specific content from being completed.

Plus, the lack of xAPI functionality curbed the client’s ability to analyse individual learning and interaction data with their content. This gap created a snowball effect in terms of planning various types of content and halted employee development.

Along with technical abilities, the client required accessibility functions that adhered to WCAG standards to ensure all their learners were able to access the content.

Overall, the client was facing difficulties providing content to their learners that would be engaging, interactive, and accessible.

Capture allows for content to be deployed five different ways as a Show Me, a Try Me, Guide Me, Practice Test, and a scored Test question. The client recognized the benefit of saving time and effort to repurpose one piece of content in multiple formats.

Convey Logo

Convey dynamic publishing, empowers the user to make content updates without having to re-load a SCORM file each time. Usually, the client’s process to update a SCORM file and replace a SCORM stub involved week-long turnaround times and a team of people. With Convey, the client experienced time and cost savings by being able to do the updates themselves within their team. The updates were simple fixes that in some cases were completed with a few clicks and updated instantly.

“Convey was huge for us because we could make edits without having to replace and republish a SCORM file each time. If we had to replace a SCORM file, that was a multi-week process. Especially when it’s just to update a spelling error or something simple like that it was lengthy, and not cost effective. Now, with dominKnow | ONE’s dynamic publishing platform, Convey, we don’t have to go through that process."

Dynamic Publishing and Hosting

The Convey dynamic publishing and hosting service enables the Customer to provide this content to its end users in two ways.

  1. Formal structured self-study learning programs with completion tracking – Instead of publishing SCORM packages and uploading them into the LMS manually, the client publishes these courses to the Convey dynamic publishing and hosting platform then connects the Convey hosted content into its LMS. When changes or edits are required, the updated content is republished to Convey and is instantly updated in the LMS. The client does not need a separate upload process for the new SCORM packages to be available in the LMS.
  2. Informal access to structured self-study learning programs – The client publishes the exact same courses to Convey as Public Share Links (instead of SCORM) to instantly create website versions. The automatically generated URL links can then be posted any place they are needed such as SharePoint, intranets, knowledge bases, etc. Content updates are also automatically available upon republishing to its external URL.

Summary

The robust customization of dominKnow | ONE allowed the client to explore different types of interactive content like game shows and board games. To create the content, the client’s team customized and reused project templates, which created a consistent look and feel. Once the final content was created, the client used Convey to dynamically publish the courses. As such, both formal and informal learners were able to access the updated courses instantly and in the flow of work.

Such results were possible with help from dominKnow’s customer support team to fully utilize dominKnow | ONE’s ability to customize xAPI data, JavaScript, and HTML. Since switching to dominKnow | ONE, the client converted 573 legacy courses over the course of three years. This change led to 1 million course completions over two years.
